4 string 34" scale fretless bass
This bass started its life as an alder body '51 P bass copy and a fretless neck with an ugly headstock (both as blem times from rondo music), So it is a frankenstein build but both the body, neck, and innards were heavily altered. In fact, now that I make bodies and necks from scratch, I can confidently say that it was way way more work to mod these parts that to start from scratch!
BODY: Alder (blew item from Rondo) with Oregon myrtle wood book matched top (from LMII in California), heavily chambered. The bridge is walnut with a piezo ribbon transducer under the bone saddle. Oiled finish (tung oil)
NECK: Maple neck and fingerboard, fretless. Headstock was reshaped. Wilkenson style tuners with clover leaf paddles. Hipshot string retainer.
PICKUPS/ELECTRONICS: '51 P bass style magnetic pickup, and Guitar Fuel ribbon transducer, and preamps (one for the map P/U, one for the piezo). The mag p/u has Volume, mid (parametric, stacking), treble, bass, the piezo just has volume. Two 1/4" outputs (one for each pickup).
WEIGHT: Delightfully light, at about 7 1/2 pounds.
SOUND: Well, at present, I have piccolo strings on it. In fact, I've not put regular strings on it yet! With the piccolo strings on a fretless, it is kind of wild: the upper register has hints of a sitar. The magnetic pickup is predictably warm with not a lot of high end. The ribbon transducer, on the other hand, is super bright and punchy. The two were really made for each other. This thing is super fun owing to the unusual nature of a fretless piccolo. However, I have never gigged with it because I play bass (!). I need to migrate to regular bass strings, set it up, and test drive on some gigs. Then this bass will be for sale.
