4 string 33" scale fretless bass.
This is one of two nearly identical instruments I made at the same time. It represents my ongoing experimentation with resonance channeling. My approach for Twin A and B was to use as much as possible reclaimed or repurposed wood. Twin A (made for Seb and Amelie) is shown here. It has two layers of resonance channels. Twin B (not shown) has three layers of the channels -- all made from the repurposed walnut steps.
BODY: walnut back and internal slats, hickory top. Walnut from some steps (from Monterey, CA) , hickory was a reject piece from a lumber store in Flagstaff AZ. Shape inspired from Fender Jaguar.
NECK: maple (from a craigslist table), with a sapele fingerboard. Dot inlays and fret lines are rosewood. There's a walnut strip down the neck too. Black Tusk nut and Gotoh tuners. Truss rod from bestbassgear.com. Hipshot string retainer. 22 fret, so you get the high E!
BRIDGE: Rosewood with bone saddle, ribbon transducer beneath the bone (from Guitar Fuel).
PREAMP: also from Guitar Fuel. I wanted the bass to be simple, so there is just a volume knob. But the internal preamp has gain, treble, mid, bass adjustments. The control cavity cover is help on by neodymium magnets. Powered by 9V battery.
WEIGHT: just over 5 1/2 pounds!
SOUND: This is a very earthy sounding bass with some woody upright tones. The LaBella tape wound strings contribute to that tone. Very fun to play!
