4 string 34" scale fretted bass
Through my buddy Dan, I met his friend Zoe, and she loves pink. This was such an amazing project: every step of the way, from the shape of everything (body, headstock, pickguard, F-hole), colors, materials, Zoe guided me in the design choices. And her sense of design is awesome. It was so fun. The result is a bass that is light, beautiful, and super punchy. No active EQ but the Dimarzio pickups would make you think it's active! This was not a from-scratch build. An existing body was heavily reworked then chambered; an existing neck was also reworked (changed the headstock shape).
BODY: Formerly a fender jaguar style body. Top 3/8 was removed, then body heavily chambered, then topped with reclaimed walnut, then F hole added. Pink was a vintage Fender color from ReRanch.com. Pickguard was Zoe's shape and perloid.
NECK: The neck was (I think) originally from rondo music. I reshaped the headstock to be fenderish, hipshot style ultralite tuners, string retainer. Zoe's logo idea. Fun to paint headstock to match the body.
PICKUPS: Dimarzio jazz bass style pickups (DP149's I think) are so punchy. You can slap it or fingers, it is fat but warm bottom. I think I strung it with GHS Boomers.
ELECTRONICS: CTS pots and that's it. no active EQ but you wouldn't know it. I think it is one of those rare cases where the chambering, pickups, wood and strings work together to give you everything you need, for just about any style.
WEIGHT: This came a bit over 7 pounds, which is light. (7.29375 Lbs to be exact, or 3.3 Kg)
SOUND: This thing is punchy and responsive! Check out the quicky video.
Recorded on iPhone w/ external mic (boominess is mic, not the bass!). Looping w/ EX45000. Made the vid for Zoey before I shipped her the bass :)
