6 string 34" scale fretless bass
When my mom passed away, I wanted to make something honoring her creativity. The body and neck are both chambered, and with round would strings on it this things is super versatile, especially with the blend choices between the magnetic and bridge piezo pick ups. This was my first project where I put channels in the neck. The bass is alive with overtones.
BODY: Acacia, from a slab, from a tree that feel in AZ, from Todd at Chequest Millworks in Peoria AZ (great guy, great place!). Acacia pickup cover and knobs from same slab. F-hole opens upper cavity. Control cavity cover held on by neodymium magnets.
NECK: 9 piece alternating bubinga and flamed maple. 24 frets. Neck thru body construction. Pao ferro fingerboard with french oak lines and dots (with pao ferro smaller dots). Hipshot ultralite tuners, tuck nut, abalone dots on the acacia veneer of the headstock. Truss rod access cover held on by magnet. Two truss rods (from bestbassgear).
PICKUPS: Bartolini soap bar, and Hipshot bridge with piezos under each saddle. That bridge... wow, if I had the guts, I'd rebuild it only w/ that bridge pickup.
ELECTRONICS: Auilar preamp (Vol, Bass, Mid, Treble) and a Bartolini blend pot. Switch for soapbox pickup to be in parallel or series
WEIGHT: The bubinga and acacia are both dense and heavy woods. Strung up, this one comes in at exactly 10 lbs. Not light, but lighter than many 6 strings.
SOUND: the combination of the pickups is great. The soapbox gives warm round tones. The bridge piezos are crisp and vibrant. The high 6th string really sings, even almost buzzes. There is crisp growl on the lower strings but with warmth. Magic!
